We will be installing Microsoft Security Essentials on Windows Server as this product is free and supplied by MIcrosoft it should suffice form most uses

Strictly speaking security essentials is not supported on servers but with a few minor tweaks this works just fine 

  1. Download a copy from Microsoft: http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/security-essentials-all-versions 
    • Once downloaded right Click on the “mseinstall.exe”
    • Select Properties
    • Click on the “Compatibility”-tab
    • Locate the “Compatibility mode”-section
    • Check “Run this program in compatibility mode for:”
    • Select From the (now active) dropdown menu “Windows 7”
  2. Open a Command Prompt "Run as Administrator"
  3. cd to your Downloads folder (ie. cd C:\Users\%username%\Downloads).
  4. Type “mseinstall.exe /disableoslimit” and follow the installer prompts to install on your Windows Server
  5. Now to manually download the latest definition updates for Microsoft Security Essentials https://support.microsoft.com/en-au/kb/971606 

All done? run a full scan and your off and running
